Description

Emry, Paradox Engine, Hedron Archive / Darksteel Ingot / Mox Amber, and a Walking Ballista / Hangarback Walker (in the graveyard even) allows you to make infinite mana by tapping the mana generator and playing the Ballista or Walker from the graveyard for 0, which untaps Emry and the mana generator, then you tap Emry again to replay the Ballista or Walker and do it again. This is in my opinion the better option for using Emry in Pioneer than Jeskai Ascendency as you can use things like Glint-Nest Crane or Inventor's Fair to find the Engine and use Emry to play it from the graveyard if you mill it with her. This gives the deck more flexibility and also greater resilience against artifact hate as every piece you need can be returned from the graveyard with Emry. Obviously losing Emry is an issue but the Ascendency versions have the same problem as this version so that is no different. Ultimately I think Sylvan Awakening is the better combo with Jeskai Ascendency and Emry simply shouldn't be played in that deck, but even then I don't think the Jeskai Ascendency combos are particularly powerful in Pioneer at the moment.

The sideboard is mostly counterspells in an attempt to stop a lobotomy spell from your opponent or otherwise protect your combo from your opponent's counters (even though you realistically don't care much if they cannot remove Emry as you can just tap her and replay the artifact they countered). If a lobotomy spell manages to take Paradox Engine it will make the game much harder to win, but it is not impossible to win by powering out a huge Walking Ballista or Hangarback Walker and beating your opponent down with that. Void Snare is there to beat whatever hate permanents your opponent may play, most prominently Pithing Needle or Spyglass which stops the combo altogether if they name Emry. Pithing Needle helps slow down a lot of decks, from the Nykthos decks to planeswalker decks, and lastly the extra copies of Hangarback Walker are good for creature matchups or for matchups where you expect a lot of hate against your combo as they allow you to win potentially without the full combo.
