Good morrow Magic Magpies! Risendragon here with my take on a rotation-proof (RP) Izzet Phoenix build. Those that have followed me and my deck building know that I love to experiment and brew and this is one brew that I feel has potential in a post-Ixalan/Dominaria rotation. This archetype has made its presence known over the past year and it is one of my favorite decks to pilot. That said, a lot of pieces in this deck are leaving the Standard format and in a post-rotation world, it could lose some of its punch. I am hoping that this build can provide someone with enough motivation to build a better Izzet Phoenix deck.

DECK TIME: [[Shock]] to deal with tiny creatures or to finish off a wounded opponent starts us off. [[Goblin Electromancer]] makes our instants and sorceries cheaper. [[Lazotep Plating]] gives us and our permanents hexproof as well as a zombie token that we can pump later with an [[Honor the God-Pharaoh]], which slides in in place of [[Tormenting Voice]] as our draw/discard engine. [[Ionize]] acts as our counterspell/damage dealer while [[Winged Words]] gives us some good card draw with our flyers and Electromancer on the board. [[Crackling Drake]] is a must-have in this deck with all the instants and sorceries we are running and it nicely complements the [[Arclight Phoenix]]. [[Ral, Storm Conduit]] is a wonderful addition to this build, dealing damage whenever we cast and instant or sorcery, scrying, and copying said instants and sorceries to dole out more damage while complementing [[Niv-Mizzet, Parun]] as a finishing threat. Sideboard has [[Lava Coil]] for creature-heavy builds, [[Negate]] for added countermagic against Esper builds, [[Expansion]] for some added fun in instant and sorcery-heavy builds, and [[Cerulean Drake]] for Mono R builds.

ADVANTAGES: 1) This deck is rotation-proof first and foremost and with Eldraine coming on board in late September, can only get better 2) It has some great synergies and 3) It has balance with aggressive creatures, some countermagic, and some burn, so beginner/intermediate players would have no trouble piloting it successfully.

DISADVANTAGES: 1) Ultimately, it is not as efficient as current rotation Izzet Phoenix, 2) Despite all its latent synergies, the deck does take time to ramp up, so against aggressive burn or aggressive builds period, this deck tends to falter and 3) With so many moving parts, if our Phoenixes do not come online or are hard cast, this deck has trouble overcoming slow starts.

Overall, this is a very fun deck to play and I have had some success with it. Once Eldraine drops, this deck will require a re-visit but until then, enjoy the deck for what it is, may all your draws be God-like and may all your spells touch the board. Good hunting!

Maybe find a spot for opt since it will stay in rotation?

Ral, it's a 3/2 flyer with haste and reanimation in a deck with a lot of instants and sorceries. Good stuff IMHO! Thanks for your observation. :)

I like the deck, but I do not understand why Arclight Phoenix is so good. Is there some kind of combo I am not seeing. I like Izzet decks but i do not understand this one and why it is so popular.
