Good evening Magic Midrange Aficionados! Hope you all had a good Monday and are settling in for a well-deserved rest at the end of the beginning of your work week. So in watching AliasV and her piloting of Grzegorz Kowalski's Dimir Control deck, I decided to look at a Dimir Midrange build. Control, straight up Control, has never been my thing. I like to play flexible decks that give me options as the game develops, akin to my chess-playing style. I like having that security blanket of beating face when the moment arises and that is why I enjoy Midrange over straight up control. I tried Grzegorz's deck and it did not suit me, so I decided to give my own build a chance. This deck does not disappoint for sure and it has some surprising additions to it.
DECK TIME: [[Duress]] gives us a peek at their hand on turn one, never a bad thing to eliminate threats before they can hit the board. [[Thought Erasure]], staple in this build, mops up what Duress cannot. [[Tyrant's Scorn]] get rid of those pesky Pteramanders and Steamkins and Steel Leafs and anything annoying that is under CMC 3. Now here is where I throw a nice twist: [[Lazotep Plating]]. It is like a [[Dive Down]] but better I think as it dodges Settles and spot removal and it gives us a zombie army. I think it is a good add and it has given me advantage in several games. [[Gleaming Overseer]] gives us zombie army and makes it hexproof with menace. [[Thief of Sanity]], cuz if our deck isn't cutting it then our opponent's sure as heck will! I love this card, the concept of exploiting an opponent's weight against them, akin to judo, is just a great sign of a flexible deck builder I think. [[Sinister Sabotage]] gives us a nice spot counter, again we only run two because really all we need to do is drop one and whenever we hold up three blue mana, we might bluff our way out of a tight spot. [[God-Eternal Kefnet]] is just a must have with its ability to play a copy of an instant or sorcery. [[Hostage Taker]] cuz see Thief of Sanity... [[Vraska's Contempt]] gives us a nice spot removal piece and lifegain, must have! [[Enter the God-Eternals]] has spot removal, lifegain, and mill while dropping or beefing our zombie army. This card changes games, as does [[Liliana, Dreadhorde General]], in fact she just outright finishes them. Sideboard has more flexibility: mass removal with [[Ritual of Soot]] and [[Cry of the Carnarium]], bounce and amassing with [[Callous Dismissal]], creature discard with [[Divest]], [[Negate]] for some counters, and two more Sabotages for added flexibility.
ADVANTAGES: 1) Flexibility: we run counters, creatures that are beefy late game, and cards that bolster our zombie army, 2) This deck matches up surprisingly well against Esper, we just seem to outlast and outgun that deck and 3) any creature heavy or planeswalker heavy build will run into trouble with this deck due to the spot removal.
DISADVANTAGES: 1) With a better land base, this deck would hum 2) true control matchups with counters and what not really make our life miserable and 3) we rely solely on two counters to keep mass removal from screwing us
Overall, I love this build. It has few frills or tricks about it, just a flexible deck that has something for everyone. Until next time, may all your hands be God-like and may your spells never get eaten by a counter. Good hunting!
