Hello There, Sorry for the bad English, not my native tongue,
First of all big thanks to the french discord community of SparkTv https://discord.gg/Xe92Ug who made this deck as much as me.
So this my primer on an Azorius Control build for war of the spark. So here goes nothing :
This deck is for you if :
This deck is not for you if :
So if you are still with me i am guessing you like control magic and being a pain the butt of your opponent, good. First things first : Why no esper? While cutting black is making us loose things like Vraska's Contempt and Kaya's Wrath i find that being in only two colors makes our games much more reliable and less costly land base wise.
Now to the deck itself : How do you pilot this beauty? Well you want early board disruption in the form of Seal Away or Prison Realm, ideally an early Search for Azcanta // Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin to filter our deck to have options against our opponent. And the you controle until you make Teferi stick to the board and win with a Finale of Glory
Cards Discussion :
Absorb : Great counterspell, makes you win 3 life wich is relevant against Aggro
Chemister's Insight : You know the drill : Drawing cards means filtering lands and finding option, almost never a dead card, except maybe in a weird oppening hand
Cleansing Nova : Good Wipe, more relevant now that enchantements and artifacts are in the meta can cause havoc versus mono black lantern controle.
Dovin's Veto : Great card against control matchup and mono blue. Help Teferi stick to the board early-mid game
Finale of Glory : Primary win con of the deck
Lazotep Plating : Great to protect our walkers , and ourselves versus Dimir mainly
Narset's Reversal : One of, maybe i'll add more maybe i'll cut it. It works wonder with our own Dovin"s Veto or to copy some ramp spell our opponent is playing.
Prison Realm Seal Away : Great against early threat and /or mono-threat decks
Search for Azcanta // Azcanta, the Sunken Ruin : Card selection, always sweet
Syncopate : We play loads of land, it's a good counterspell versus deck who absolutely want to play on curve.
Jace, Wielder of Mysteries : Our other wincon, card draw and if the game goes long self mill to victory.
Teferi, Hero of Dominaria : You know the guy, you probably hate him or love him already
Teferi, Time Raveler : If this resolves and sticks, you probably won. Backbreaking against controle matchup and the 12 mana instant speed Finale of Golry tends to make people scoope up and concede.
Blast Zone : Mvp of the deck, sometime a one sided boardwipe with no counterplay. Cool.
Commence the Endgame : Backbreaking against control matchups especially post side when they take out all creatures hate
Ixalan's Binding : Resolve it against the ennemie wincon or use it as one more exile effect. Looking at you Phoenix.
Sideboard discussion :
Lyra Dawnbringer : Wincon after sideboarding agains some controle matchup, can be usefull vs aggro weenie too.
Demystify : Enchantement based deck call for an enchantement based solution
History of Benalia : Bringing this in after sideboarding can surprise opponents and win you the game very fast, usefull against dimir/esper control who will sideboard out creature hate.
Spell Pierce : I bring this mainly vs monoblue and control matchup
Ashiok, Dream Render : Never tested this one in the field but seems good vs reanimator decks
Narset, Parter of Veils : Seems very good agains control matchup but never resolved it atm.
I hope you liked this, working on an artifact deck with Karn atm, will let you know when it's done.
Evolution of the deck :
01/05
- 2 Syncopate mainboard
I am considering taking out Lyra out of the sideboard and putting in one more Dovin's Veto a great spell in control matchup's
Currently considering taking out Benalia for life gain sideboard vs Aggro. HALP ME
Matchups:
Esper Control : Ez Game Ez Life, they can't resolve threat against you and half of their cards are dead in hand game 1, game 2 take out 2 Tef and 2 Settle put in 4 History of benalia and watch them concede turn 5.
MonoR Aggro : If you don't have the right hand the game is lost, you are looking for exile effects and wipe
Grixis : Same as esper. They have a bad game 1 against you and you can surprise them game 2. Once again try to have spell pierce turn 1 vs Thought Erasure or turn 2 Narset's Reversal
MonoR Aggro: Hard matchup except when you have a great oppening hand with lot's of board disruption.
