The Mythic Rare Podcast - Ep 10 - The Most Interesting Decks from Twitch Rivals

We are still just a few days after the massive banning ov Oko, Veil of Summer and Once Upon a Time and we already have the results of our first big tournament to discuss. $75,000 and a whole lot of bragging rights were on the line over Monday and Tuesday in the biggest Magic Twitch Rivals tournament to date, with over 200 competitors duking it out for supremacy. From the immediate results of the tournament, it is clear the ban was a smashing success. The top 8 consisted of 7 different archetypes, with the only repeat being Golgari Adventures. Here was the meta breakdown, taken from user Michal Szymalski on Twitter:

Thats a lot more archetypes than Mythic Championsip VI thats for sure! There was also at least one of each mono color deck that won at least 4 games in day one, which you definetly do not see all that often!

Heres a look at the results from the most popular archetypes. This was taken from https://mtgazone.com/, although I am not sure if they are 100% accurate numbers since I noticed a few of them are off. For example, Brad Nelson played Temur Reclamation in the tournament but his deck in this database for was Simic Quasiduplicate. Regardless, it is a lot of work to enter 200+ decks into a database and I expect most of these are correct, so the data should be viewed very close to accurate!

Jekai Fires

Golgari Adventure

Temur Reclamation

As is apparent from these results, it was overall a rough showing from Temur Reclamation. This deck had a ton of pro players on it as well, and although Seth Manfield had a good run with it, nobody else really progressed very far in the tournamanet. Jeskai Fires and Golgari Adventure on the other hand posted very sufficient numbers, each representing a top 8 spot and several day 2 performers.

For the full top 16, you can check out the Aetherhub Tournament List page here!

Despite none of these making the top 16, there were several really interesting decks that caught my eye and had a really strong day 1 showing.

1) Lei Shi Tian - Mono White Aggro

Lee Shi Tian - Post Ban Mono White

$1.37€0.880.03
$0.21€0.120.03
$1.55€1.520.06

As he said before playing it, it is time to find out if Mono white is actually good again or if he is just a madman reminiscing about the good ol days. Although crushing it with the deck in day 1, he unfortunately lost in the round of 32 to Jeskai Fires.

2) Abzan Sacrifice

$0.49€0.580.02
$1.00€0.920.15
$2.13€1.380.25

This deck was played by MPL superstar Autumn Burchett as well as a few others, and is an example of just another way to use the Cauldron Familiar/Witches Oven Combo. We saw this combo in 3 completely archetypes in the top 8 alone, and this Abzan variant splashes white in order to fit in Doom Fortold. Although only one player on the deck posted 4 wins in day 1, there is certainly a chance that Autumn and the others on the deck are on to something here!

3) 5c Niv Mizzet Control

$8.15€8.119.68
$0.99€0.950.02
$4.10€2.870.03

This deck reminds me of some crazy brawl concoction come to life and I love it. There are so many 1 drops to try and take advantage of Niv's ability that the deck probably struggles with consistency sometimes, but boy does this look like a blast. The sideboard running 13 unique cards is also hilarious, and although I doubt we will see this strategy cracking the meta open, It does seem like a blast for grinding some wins on the ladder.
